The Lace Up Story
A couple at Brookwood Middle school named Josh and Laura are walking up to the bus stop when they see one of the new kids at the school named Iggy getting picked on by three of the class bullies. Iggy is getting shoved around and being called named but is really getting a lot of ridicule for the bright neon green shoelaces that he is wearing. Josh and Laura are appalled but don’t really know what to think of the situation.
On the bus, Iggy is sitting in the front row by himself crying while the bullies are snickering sitting a few rows behind and still throwing out insults. Josh finally had enough of it and stood up to tell the main bully Mikey to leave Iggy alone. Mikey just tells Josh to be quiet and mind his own business and continues to make fun of Iggy with his bully friends.
Later on that day, Josh and Laura met up with their friends at lunch time and tell them about the incident with Iggy and the bullies at the bus stop that morning. Josh exclaims in almost a joking manner that if everyone wore neon green shoe laces that the bullies couldn’t single anyone out. All of a sudden, a light bulb goes off in Laura’s head and exclaims that that is not such a far-fetched idea after all and in fact that it would be a great way to get people to unite the school against bullying.
Josh, Laura, and their friends decide to get bright neon shoelaces and give them out the following week at school to anyone who wants to support their anti-bullying campaign. Josh’s dad, who is the owner of a sports equipment store, is able to supply Josh with hundreds of neon shoe-laces for his campaign.
Josh and Laura the following week make an announcement over the intercom at the school during their first class asking people to come out to the cafeteria during lunch to pick up their neon shoelaces to fight against and stand up to bullying.
Almost all of the students showed up during their lunch period to join the rally against bullying and among the last to show up to the table was Iggy. He knew that Josh had tried to stand up to the bullies the week before on the bus when he was being pushed around and thanked him and Laura for sharing his story and spreading the word to take a stand against bullying.
For the rest of the school year, students joined Iggy in wearing their neon green shoelaces on their shoes, in their hair, on the wrists, on their backpacks, and in many other ways to show their support and serve as a reminder for anti bullying.
